Description

Superb Gem 1940-S Half Dollar
Remarkable Quality and Strike

1940-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. This is a coin of remarkable beauty and equally remarkable quality. Strike definition is usually the issue, but not on this piece. PCGS has seen only seven examples at this grade level with none finer (3/13). Even if all seven of those submissions are separate coins -- which we highly doubt -- it is difficult to imagine a finer coin, and we note that CAC has given its approval to this piece as well, further limiting the supply to a maximum of four pieces. Thorough mint luster engages the viewer under a light layer of patina, for which the words mauve, pinkish-gray, sunset-orange, and ice-blue all seem inadequate. This coin must be seen. The strike is far sharper than normal for this problematic issue, decently detailed on Liberty's head even though there is minimal thumb evidence. The lower eagle feathers are far bolder than on most examples. The last two PCGS specimens we offered in this grade sold for $27,600 and $25,300, respectively (Heritage, 8/2011, lot 3507; 1/2009, lot 2882).(Registry values: N2998)
