Description
1807 B-1 Quarter, Iridescent MS64
Condition Census for the Variety
1807 25C B-1, R.2, MS64 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/2, a
middle die state with clashing on both sides but not yet showing
the cracks and lapping that emerge in later states of the B-1 die
pair. B-1 is one of two die varieties for the 1807 Draped Bust
quarter, showing the 5 in the date with its flag imbedded in the
fletchings. The date as a whole is scarce in Mint State. Most such
coins seen grade in MS63 to MS64 range, although MS64 coins are
rare overall. Repeated appearances of a few specific pieces
artificially inflate the perceived availability of such coins,
while other examples are tightly held. This B-1 coin is within the Condition Census of the variety. The Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian census lists the Clapp-Eliasberg MS67 coin as the sole finest, with an MS66 piece second finest. Congregated just below that are a handful of MS64 pieces. The Rea, et al census lists four MS64 pieces, but the current coin is not among them. Chief pedigree markers on this coin include a thin ribbon of gray die grease running vertically through the 8 in the date, and another connecting star 1 to the dentils via a long path to the dentils left of the lowest hair curls. Abrasions are largely absent, and the coin displays lovely satin luster with champagne and iridescent hues. Localized strike softness on some of the obverse border stars is typical for the type, while the central devices yield bold definition. An outstanding example of the final-year Draped Bust issue, in decidedly rare condition. Population (both varieties included): 15 in 64, 5 finer (11/24).
