Description

1870 Liberty Double Eagle, MS61
Rare Type Two Twenty in Mint State

1870 $20 MS61 NGC. CAC. The 1870 Liberty double eagle claims a smallish business-strike mintage of 155,185 pieces and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, as the few numismatists who could afford to collect double eagles in the 19th century tended to prefer proof examples to circulation strikes. Like most Type Two twenties, the 1870 Philadelphia issue can be found without much effort in circulated condition, but Mint State examples are rare.

The present coin is an attractive MS61 specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. The pleasing apricot-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. Census: 17 in 61, 18 finer. CAC: 6 in 61, 4 finer (3/17).(Registry values: N4719)
