Description
1867-S Double Eagle, MS61
Mint State Rarity
1867-S $20 MS61 NGC. The 1867-S double eagle is a recognized
rarity in Mint State, as is seen by even a glance at the certified
population data. But it may actually be rarer in Uncirculated
condition than generally thought. The combined NGC and PCGS census
reports 52 Mint State representatives but this likely includes
numerous resubmissions. In the last two-plus decades, we have
handled only 13 Uncirculated coins, including some reappearances of
previously offered pieces -- none graded finer than MS61. This
piece is vibrantly lustrous with yellow-gold surfaces that show
warm peach and orange overtones. Scattered abrasions limit the
grade but none are individually obtrusive. Eye appeal is pleasing.
Census: 16 in 61, 9 finer (7/16).(Registry values: P6)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26A2, PCGS# 8952, Greysheet# 9908)
Weight: 33.44 grams
