1861 C.S.A. Half Dollar, Unc Details
J.W. Scott Restrike of 1879
1861 50C Scott Restrike -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. Unc
Details. The original Confederate half dollar reverse die was
obtained by J.W. Scott in 1879 through Ebenezer Locke Mason, Jr.,
who bought it and an original Confederate half from Dr. B.F.
Taylor, Chief Coiner at the New Orleans branch mint under
Confederate occupation. Scott acquired 500 1861 half dollars and
used the reverse die to produce 500 of these restrikes. This piece
shows the usual flatness around the obverse border and an uneven
reverse impression. Evidence of an old cleaning does not overly
distract.
