Description

1839 Small Letters Eagle, AU55
Type of 1840 Rarity

1839 $10 Type of 1840, Small Letters AU55 NGC. Christian Gobrecht's revised design for the Liberty eagle appeared late in 1839, and the recorded mintage of 12,447 pieces were all produced in the fourth quarter of the year. The new style has reverse letters that are described as Small Letters in the literature, but they are only slightly smaller than the Type of 1838 with Large Letters. Actual measurements of several letters in the legend and denomination show a height of 1.7 mm. on the Large Letters reverse, and 1.5 mm. on the Small Letters reverse.

David Akers estimated in 1998 that only 40 to 50 examples of this rarity survive, while Q. David Bowers suggested that 50 to 80 examples survive in A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins that was published last year. Bowers notes that at least two obverse dies were made, although we are unaware of any detailed description of those dies. This obverse has diagonal die lines up from the border below the date, and a delicate die crack connecting stars 2 through 8. Every one of the 34 Small Letters eagles illustrated at our Permanent Auction Archives shares this single obverse die.

The present Choice AU example easily ranks in the top 20 survivors of this issue, and is probably within the top dozen. Considerable luster remains on the pleasing lemon-yellow surfaces of this piece that exhibits myriad marks of no consequence. Census: 9 in 55, 6 finer (1/18).
