Description
1879/8 Nickel, PR69
The Single Finest Proof in the Series
1879/8 5C PR69 PCGS. There are probably many Shield nickel
specialists aware of this coin, who have seen it listed on the PCGS
Population Report. This is the single finest Shield nickel
proof certified. Period. At PCGS or NGC. A monumental offering as
such, it features the 9 in the date punched over a previously
entered 8. Breen describes the variety: "As the 9 is narrower than
the 8, faint traces of 8 can sometimes be seen on either side, but
usually only within top and bottom. Use a microscope; the traces of
8 are always faint. Rare." The surfaces are reflective beneath a
layer of pastel iridescence that includes shades of blue, green,
rose, and lemon-gold. Both sides are flawless. There is a single
lint mark near the right serif of the T in CENTS. Housed in a green
label holder. Population: 1 in 69, 0 finer (11/18).Ex: Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 1/2000), lot 58; New York PNG Auction (Stack's Bowers, 10/2014), lot 36.(Registry values: N1)
