Description

1838 No Drapery, Large Stars Dime, MS66
Two Finer Examples at PCGS, Ex: Gardner

1838 10C No Drapery, Large Stars, F-110, R.4, MS66 PCGS. The 1838 No Drapery, Large Stars dime is a collectible first-year type, showing 13 hand-punched stars around the upper obverse border. Premium Gem is about the highest grade most collectors can realistically hope to locate, as finer examples are extremely rare and fetch ever-strong prices when they appear at auction. Sharply struck and attractive, this Premium Gem shows blended violet, lilac, blue, and orange hues over each carefully preserved side. Vibrant luster glistens through the patina, rounding out the appeal. Star 1 nearly touches the rock on this variety, and a die crack runs from the lower-right obverse rim below Liberty's sandal through the base to the lower gown. The reverse is a late die state of the Partial Drapery reverse with a weak die clash mark behind the E in DIME. Fortin rates the variety as an R.4. Population: 21 in 66, 2 finer (4/16).
Ex: Purchased by Eugene Gardner from Jason Carter (11/2001); Eugene H. Gardner Collection, Part IV (Heritage, 10/2015), lot 98231.
