Description
1787 Miller 32.8-aa Connecticut Copper, VF30
Elusive Die Marriage
1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, FNDE, M. 32.8-aa, W-3275,
R.6, VF30 NGC. 103.6 grains. Obverse die 32.8 is known with
reverse die aa. Reverse die aa is known with obverse dies 32.5 and
32.8. This is a rare die marriage that was missing from the Martin,
Oechsner, and Newman collections, and another example with the
reverse legend blundered, showing INDE over FUDE. Slight planchet
roughness is evident at the center of the obverse on this
golden-brown and olive example. Despite its overall appearance,
this piece ranks high in the Condition Census and rivals the finest
known examples of the die marriage.Miller 32.9-X.7 is not included in the Donald G. Partrick Collection. Only three or four examples are known and they are all in low grades. Listed on page 66 of the 2021 Guide Book.
Ex: Richard Picker Reference Collection (Coin Galleries, 7/1992), lot 2670; George Perkins Collection (Stack's, 1/2000), lot 337; Jon Hanson (1/12/2000); Donald G. Partrick.
