Description

1870 Liberty Five, AU53
Lowest 1870 Half Eagle Mintage

1870 $5 AU53 NGC. Given the popularity of the 1870-CC and 1870-S half eagles, it is perhaps not surprising that the 1870 Philadelphia issue takes a back seat to its branch mint progeny. Yet in terms of mintage, the 1870 P-mint half eagles are rarer by far, as evidenced by their population at most levels throughout the grading scale. This partially prooflike AU53 example displays vibrant reddish-gold color and sharply struck motifs. Light field chatter does not include any heavy marks, and Liberty's portrait is smooth. Just 4,000 pieces were struck; appropriately, only a few dozen pieces exist in finer grades. PCGS suggests less than 100 pieces survive in all grades combined. Census: 8 in 53, 19 finer (10/21).
