Choice 1924-S Double Eagle
From the Akers, Duckor, Brahin Collections

1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Jay Brahin, Dr. Steven L. Duckor, David W. Akers. The 1924-S has a mintage of nearly 3 million pieces, but that figure is misleading. A large majority of the issue never left Treasury holdings, and was eventually melted after President Roosevelt ended the issue of gold coins in 1933. It was a different story for the 1924, which like other Philadelphia dates from the mid-1920s was paid out in quantity, principally for payments of imports.
Less a thousand 1924-S double eagles escaped the mass meltings. Most resided in foreign vaults as bank reserves at the time of the recall, and examples have trickled back to the United States once the rarity of the issue was known. The typical 1924-S grades MS62 to MS63. The issue is extremely rare as a Gem, and few pieces are MS60 or lower, since gold coins seldom circulated after World War I. The present coin is boldly struck and has beautiful orange toning. As one might expect from its illustrious pedigree, marks are difficult to find. Population: 86 in 64, 3 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
