Description

1898-S Double Eagle, MS65
Boldly Struck Branch Mint Piece

1898-S $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1898-S Liberty double eagle is the most common San Francisco issue of the 19th century with a large mintage over 2.5-million pieces. While plentiful at Choice and Gem levels, finer grades are virtually unobtainable, as PCGS reports only one piece in MS66 and one in MS67 (6/25). The issue is also revered for being well produced, and this remarkable Gem shows an outstanding strike on bright and flashy wheat-gold surfaces. The detailed devices are layered in soft satin that spins into an electric cartwheel effect. Remarkably free of abrasions, a loupe reveals only a tiny mark on Liberty's lip and extremely faint reed marks on her cheek, neither of which are bothersome. This piece provides a fantastic opportunity for type collectors.(Registry values: N4719)
