1899-S Double Eagle, MS64+ Prooflike
Finest in the Prooflike Classification, CAC

1899-S $20 MS64+ Prooflike PCGS. CAC. This CAC-endorsed example is the finest 1899-S Prooflike double eagle certified by PCGS by more than two grading points. The well-mirrored sun-gold fields host a sharp strike throughout both the obverse and the reverse while showing only a few superficial abrasions on the glass-smooth fields. The central strike is sharp and only minor weakness exists on obverse stars 9 to 11. We note slight clockwise rotation (about 10°) of the reverse in relation to the obverse. The exceptional, borderline Gem Prooflike surfaces suggest an early strike from fresh dies. This is the highest-graded Type Three prooflike double eagle from the pre-1900 era. PCGS Population: 1 in 64 (1 in 64+) Prooflike, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 64, 0 finer (4/25).
