Description

1905 Liberty Twenty, PR64
Great Type Example

1905 $20 PR64 NGC. Despite a reported mintage of 92 proof coins for the 1905 double eagle, only an estimated 30 to 40 examples survive today. Some entered circulation; NGC and PCGS combined report eight circulated or impaired proofs from PR45 to PR58, and for the first half-century of this issue's existence, twenty dollars was a tidy sum to hold back when hard times came knocking.

The low mintage of business strikes for this issue, some 59,000 pieces, further enhances its demand factors.

The present near-Gem proof offers orange-gold surfaces showing good reflectivity and much essential eye appeal remaining, despite a handful of trivial contact marks and hairlines in the fields that determine the grade. A pair of small flaked areas in the right obverse field, between Liberty and star 12, are the most identifiable markers. A curved lintmark runs on the reverse from the right ornament edge, left of U(NUM), upward into the field. The proof strike is full and pleasing throughout both sides. This is a beautiful proof example of this classic Liberty Head design, a great coin for type purposes.

The last example in this grade and service we offered was lot 5690 in our Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2010), which realized $34,500.(Registry values: P1)
