1840-C Half Eagle, XF40
First Year With Reverse Mintmark

1840-C $5 XF40 NGC. Variety 1. A bold die crack travels from the rim through the I in AMERICA and the arrowheads. This North Carolina branch mint issue represents the first year of the modified portrait design and the first time the mintmark was placed on the reverse. Examples are very scarce in XF condition or better. Red-gold colors this typically struck 1840-C half eagle. Surfaces marks are numerous, though not overly distracting as is often the case. Census: 12 in 40, 64 finer (9/16).(Registry values: P5)
