Description

1880 Gold Dollar, MS68
Top-Tier Type Coin

1880 G$1 MS68 PCGS. CAC. The 1880 gold dollar had a remarkably low mintage of only 1,600 coins, the second-lowest production figure in the series from the Philadelphia Mint. However, numerous examples were retained by dealers and speculators, with the result that this issue is one of the more easily obtainable dates from this period and is highly popular among type collectors. Almost all known examples are in Mint State, and the majority of these grade in the MS65 to MS67 range. In MS68, this issue finally becomes a condition rarity, and finer pieces are nearly unknown.

This piece is boldly struck, with seemingly flawless preservation. Heavily frosted devices beautifully accent semiprooflike fields, while warm sun-gold patina blankets each side. Population: 30 in 68 (3 in 68+), 1 finer. CAC: 23 in 68, 1 finer (2/21).
