Description

1921-S Cent, CAC'd MS65 Red
A Demonstration of 'Connoisseurship
Combined With Patience'

1921-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. CAC. Ex: Whispering Pines. The 1921-S is one of the great problems for collectors of high-end Red Lincoln cents. Examples of the date even remotely achieving that description are often prohibitively rare. The finest pieces known are 25 MS65 Red coins, three of which are NGC with the other 22 PCGS (11/24). But even within these coins the quality varies. In A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents, Q. David Bowers writes: "Connoisseurship combined with patience is needed to land a truly choice prize." The Whispering Pines coin, being one of just five Gem Red pieces endorsed by CAC, is arguably the embodiment of a "truly choice prize."

The coin displays bright, satiny luster characterized by unique golden-copper and sun-orange hues. No distracting abrasions appear, and is also, quite spectacularly, devoid of obvious carbon spotting. We have possibly never seen this coin's equal among 1921-S cents. Population: 22 in 65 Red, 0 finer. CAC: 5 in 65, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N2998)
