1785 Inimica Tyrannis America Copper
Confederatio, Large Circle, W-5630
Fine Details, Ex: Norweb

1785 COPPER Inimica Tyrannis America, Confederatio, Large Circle -- Smoothed -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. W-5630, R.7. There are an estimated seven to nine survivors of this rare Confederatio variety. Inimica Tyrannis Americana translates from Latin as "America opposed to tyranny." The design is clearly intended for an American audience, but little is known of its production, or that of any other varieties in the Confederatio and related series. All are very rare. Three dies were paired with a shield reverse for New Jersey coppers (Maris 3-C, 4-C, and 5-C), which implies they were made in the United States. The upper stars have a blurry appearance, but the remainder of the design is fairly sharp. The mahogany-brown and steel-gray surfaces are lightly granular. Listed on page 59 of the 2020 Guide Book.
