1875 Three Dollar, Aluminum Gilt Example
Judd-1437, PR64

1875 Three Dollar, Judd-1437 Gilt, Pollock-1579, High R.7, PR64 NGC. A regular dies trial piece for the three dollar gold piece. Struck in aluminum and gilt with a reeded edge. Saul Teichman notes that: "The die trials of this date often have been gilded due to the extreme rarity of its gold counterpart." He goes on to explain, "Although these are described as regular die trials pieces in the standard references, it is more likely that the off-metal 'trials' of this year were deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets." Only two or three pieces are believed known in gilt aluminum or non-gilt aluminum. This date is also known in copper. The 1875 three dollar is a major 19th century, proof-only rarity, and this gilt aluminum pattern gives the collector a more affordable alternative. The surfaces are remarkably bright, undoubtedly because of the underlying aluminum rather than the often seen copper patterns that are gilt. Little reflectivity is seen in the fields, though, and there are no noticeable marks on either side.
