Description

1864-S Double Eagle, MS61
S.S. Brother Jonathan Treasure Coin

1864-S $20 MS61 PCGS. Ex: Brother Jonathan. The S.S. Brother Jonathan sank off the coast of northern California in July 1865, not far from the port at Crescent City. Along with the loss of lives was the loss of a fortune in gold coins, mostly double eagles, that were recovered in the 1990s. A large part of the treasure consisted of 1865-S double eagles, with fewer representatives of earlier years, such as this 1864-S specimen. This piece has slightly matte surfaces but lacks the "sea salvage" appearance seen with other treasure coins. In fact, all of the Brother Jonathan coins (and this cataloger saw every one of them) had brilliant light yellow luster with little effect from the ocean water. A slightly indistinct strike is evident, but the luster is brilliant light yellow with full mint radiance. Population: 21 in 61, 15 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719)
