Description
1841 No Drapery Dime, PR53
Only Two No Drapery Proofs Known
Ex: F.C.C. Boyd, The Ahwash Plate Coin
1841 10C No Drapery, F-101, R.8, PR53 NGC. Small Stars, No
Drapery, Upright Shield. Traditionally, the No Drapery feature of
this extremely rare early proof has been attributed to die
polishing, but the uncovering of its big-brother counterpart, the
Newman-Gardner PR67+ coin, made definitive die analysis possible,
proving that the 1841 No Drapery proof dime is in fact a
transitional design between the original No Drapery obverse of
1838-1840 and the With Drapery design of later years. John
McCloskey published his study the 1841 No Drapery proof dies in
Issue #80 of the Gobrecht Journal. Only two examples of the
issue are known. This is the circulated piece that is plated in
Ahwash and on the Fortin webpage. This coin was discovered by F.C.C. Boyd in the early 1940s and was first offered for public sale when Boyd's material was sold under the name of the World's Greatest Collection in 1945. It reappeared 18 years later in New Netherlands' 57th Sale where it was described as "once a proof," and it was later offered in the 1973 MANA Sale (Kagin's, 11/73), lot 1107, where it was reported to have realized $52,000. The coin has been off the market since it appeared in lot 6029 of our Long Beach Signature sale (Heritage, 10/2001), where it realized $47,500.
The coin shows evidence of moderate handling, but the surfaces still retain enough of the original proof texture to make it identifiable as a special striking. The surfaces display natural gold and honey-orange toning with trivial marks. In his roster of proofs, Walter Breen only mentioned one other proof 1841 -- the "Col." Green-Newman-Gardner coin, which has only recently reappeared at auction after being hidden in the Newman Collection for decades. The Smithsonian does not have a proof 1841, and this may well be the only example available to collectors in the foreseeable future.
