From the Missouri Cabinet

1840 1/2 C Reverse of 1840 PR66 Brown PCGS. CAC. Second Restrike, B-3 (1-C), R.6. Ex: Missouri Cabinet Collection. 78.3 grains. This Premium Gem Second Restrike proof has a more than century-old provenance and was housed in several famous numismatic cabinets including those of George Rice, Peter Mougey, William Woodin, and the Norweb Family. Part of Breen's Series VI Restrikes and enumerated in Richard T. Coleman's Group III for the Second Restrike half cents.

This impressive example has brilliant lavender and blue toning on the obverse with cobalt-blue on the reverse. A few scattered contact marks and carbon flecks are inconsequential The strike is sharp as expected, and the fields are fully mirrored, especially on the obverse. This is an extraordinary example of the 1840 Braided Hair half cent that represents the first year of the type. Our EAC grade PR65.
