Description

1849, Small Date Half Cent, PR45
B-1, Original

1849 1/2 C Small Date, Original PR45 NGC. B-1, R.6. Large Berries. The production of half cents for circulation resumed in 1849, after a 14-year hiatus. But those pieces bore Large Dates. The 1849 Small Date is a proof-only issue that comes in two varieties: Originals, with large berries within the wreath, and First Restrikes, with small berries in the wreath. Although struck as a proof, the present medium brown Original example eventually briefly entered commerce, where it received light wear along with a few thin obverse handling marks. NGC has certified only four Original proofs of this date (7/19). Our EAC grade PR40.
