Description

Rare 1872 Three Dollar Gold, PR64
Only 30 Pieces Struck

1872 $3 PR64 PCGS. Only 30 proof three dollar gold pieces were minted in 1872, but the survival rate is fairly high for such a limited production. Proof three dollar gold coins enjoyed some popularity as gift items, although the business-strike mintage failed to circulate at the time of issue.
The present coin is a sharply detailed Choice specimen, one of the finest survivors from the tiny proof mintage. The surfaces are deeply reflective, with vivid greenish-gold fields. A few minor hairlines and contact marks on both sides explain the grade. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (5/11).(Registry values: N7079)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28AC, PCGS# 8035, Greysheet# 8721)

Weight: 5.02 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
