Description
Rarely Seen Dickeson Restrike Token
Judd-C1792-1, MS64 Brown
Circa 1859 Dickeson Restrike Token, Breen-1380, Judd-C1792-1,
MS64 Brown NGC. The obverse features a defiant eagle perched on
a rock. The reverse displays the legends "TRIAL PIECE/DESIGNED
FOR/UNITED STATES/CENT./1792." According to Breen's 1988
Encyclopedia, Dr. Montroville Wilson Dickeson obtained a
pair of dies created by early mint employee Adam Eckfeldt. These
dies were never used for coinage or pattern purposes, and were
assumedly sold as scrap metal by the mint. Dickeson apparently
believed the die was connected with the 1792 Getz or Birch cents.
Breen notes "untraced" but the very rare type was illustrated in
Dickeson's American Numismatic Manual (1859). Struck in
copper with a plain edge. A sharply struck piece with ruby-red and
gold color. The eagle die is rusted and has a break at 5 o'clock. A
small planchet flaw below the upright of the E in CENT serves as a
pedigree marker.Ex: Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 11/2004), lot 10515, which realized $891.25.
