1807 Capped Bust Left Five, MS65
First Year of Design, BD-8
Condition Census Example

1807 $5 Bust Left, BD-8, R.2, MS65 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, with prominent clash marks below the bust and on Liberty's cheek. John Reich's Capped Bust Left design replaced the old Capped Bust Right motif on the half eagle part way through the year in 1807. According to the 2022 Guide Book, a substantial mintage of 51,605 half eagles of the new design was accomplished that year. Only two die varieties are known for the date and type. Both Capped Bust Left varieties share a common obverse. This coin represents the popular BD-8 variety, with the O in OF placed above the N in UNUM. As noted before, this was the second (and final) use of the obverse die, but the hardy reverse die was used again to produce the BD-1, BD-2, and BD-3 varieties of 1808. John Dannreuther estimates the BD-8 die pair was used to strike 42,500-47,500 examples of the reported mintage.

The BD-8 is an available die variety and a popular choice with type collectors. The surviving population numbers 500-750 examples in all grades. Currently, NGC has certified five coins in MS65 (with one of those in 65+), with one finer, while PCGS has graded another four examples in MS65, with two finer (10/21).

This spectacular Gem exhibits razor-sharp definition in most areas, with fine detail on the star centers and eagle's feathers. Some minor loss of detail is apparent in the eagle's talons, due to lapping. Some faint planchet adjustment marks show in the obverse dentils. The virtually flawless antique-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster from both sides and overall eye appeal is terrific. This Condition Census example will be a welcome addition to the finest collection or Registry Set.
