Description

1844-C Quarter Eagle, MS62
Second Finest Known
Ex: Clapp/Eliasberg/Elrod/Dingler

1844-C $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Eliasberg. The typical example of this misunderstood date is worn and dull with poor eye appeal. The present example, which has long been recognized as among the finest known 1844-C quarter eagles, has excellent luster for the issue. What is most remarkable about this coin, though, is its color. The obverse and reverse both show attractive orange-gold and reddish-gold color, and this is one of the few high-grade 1844-C quarter eagles that retains its rich natural hues. The strike is a bit weak, even for this issue, with flat radial lines in the stars and a very soft impression at the central reverse. There are some light ticks in the obverse fields but it is still choice for the grade. This piece is somewhat hard to appreciate for the collector who is unfamiliar with the idiosyncrasies of the issue but it is a remarkable piece with a great pedigree to boot.
The 1844-C is less rare from an overall standpoint than formerly believed. It remains rare, though, in higher grades. In Uncirculated it is very rare with an estimated four to six pieces known. The Eliasberg/Elrod/Dingler coin is the second finest, trailing only a single PCGS MS63 that is Ex: Bass II, lot 365.
