Description
1861-O 50C CSA Obverse, WB-102, Die Pair 11, R.3, FS-401, VF35 PCGS. While seven die pairs were used to strike 1861-O half dollars by the Confederacy, many collectors prefer those struck from Die Pair 11, which represents the first use of the obverse die that was later used to strike the four original Confederate half dollars with the famous CSA reverse (Die Pair 12). This piece shows an early die stage with the diagnostic crack from the rim right of star 7 to the bridge of Liberty's nose, yet late-state die cracks at the date area and Liberty's foot are not visible. Pleasing old-silver color complements golden-gray accents around the raised devices, with only minor marks and a few delicate lines consistent with the Choice VF grade. From The Bayside Collection. Consignor's Note: No coins in The Bayside Collection were submitted to NGC or PCGS for regrading or crossover since the coins were originally purchased by the consignor.
