Description
1839-D Half Eagle, AU58
Ex: S.S. New York
1839-D $5 AU58 NGC. Winter 2-A. Ex: S.S. New York.
Important not only for its scarcity as a one-year type, this 1839-D
half eagle is a formidable condition rarity as confirmed by the few
AU58 pieces or finer that exist. Christian Gobrecht's initial
rendition for the Liberty Head design appears on the 1839-D five
dollar gold, with its curved neck truncation that embraces the
obverse mintmark. The design varies significantly from the later
Liberty Head dates 1840 to 1861.An unanticipated hurricane brought the S.S. New York to grief in the Gulf of Mexico in September 1846. This is a bright and pleasing green-gold example as conserved among the S.S. New York shipwreck recoveries. The strike is sharp for this second-year Dahlonega issue, with only a trace of wear on the Liberty's face curls and the eagle's wingtips. A loupe reveals faint abrasions and tiny marks, although the fields appear smooth and attractive in-hand. The coin remains housed in its special label S.S. New York holder. The eye appeal is excellent. Census: 17 in 58, 6 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P4)
