Description

1856 Half Eagle, MS65
Incredible Condition Census Example

1856 $5 MS65 NGC. This is an amazing rarity in Gem condition. In fact, any Mint State example of this date is elusive. Just 197,900 examples were coined, and only five Gem quality coins have been certified by the two major grading services -- Condition Census population that increased only one coin in the last two decades. Not only will specialists in the series be excited by this offering, but type collectors will also consider this an important opportunity.

This example is highly lustrous with satiny yellow-gold surfaces and traces of pinkish toning. It is sharply struck, although not fully defined. The top hair details, as well as the top of the coronet, are softly defined with a couple hair strands merged together. On the reverse, the eagle's claws and the arrow feather are weakly impressed. Census: 3 in 65, 0 finer (11/24).(Registry values: P5)
