Description

1860-C Half Eagle, MS63
Rare So Fine

1860-C $5 MS63 NGC. Winter-1. Not many of the 14,813 Charlotte Mint half eagles struck in 1860 have survived, and high-quality examples are major rarities. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note: "Most of the coins seen for the date are heavily circulated. The average 1860-C half eagle is no better than Extremely Fine. High-grade examples are known, but seldom offered. Just a few examples of the 1860-C have been graded at the choice level." In fact, NGC has certified just two coins finer than this piece, and PCGS has never topped the grade of the example offered here. It is an attractive piece with brilliant yellow luster and reflective fields. The obverse is nicely struck while the reverse has the indistinct appearance associated with every known example of the date. Census: 1 in 63, 2 finer (11/24).
