Description

1874 Liberty Half Eagle, MS64 CAC
The Sole Finest Example Known
From David Akers' Session of Auction '89

1874 $5 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Akers, Auction '89. A stunning example with sharp motifs and prooflike fields. There are few small abrasions, but the overall eye appeal of this piece is exceptional for the grade, as one would expect of the sole finest example known. The 1874 half eagle boasts a scant mintage of only 3,488 pieces and is rare in any Mint State grade. The finest coins at NGC are in MS62, while PCGS reports two coins in MS63 and this one in MS64 (11/24). We have not seen one of the MS63 pieces for nearly two decades. This is the first offering of the MS64 coin in our auctions. Rich golden-honey hues add all the more to the outstanding visual appeal of this must-have rarity. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/24).
Ex: Auction '89 (Akers, 7/1989), lot 1393; A.J. Vanderbilt Collection; Rarities Night (Stack's Bowers, 3/2021), lot 4154.(Registry values: P3)
