Description

1883-CC Half Eagle, MS62
Underrated Rarity in Mint State

1883-CC $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Winter 1-A. The sole dies. The 1883-CC half eagle is an underappreciated issue in the Carson City series of coinage. Rusty Goe puts it this way in The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Volume 2:

"Collectors seeking an example in any grade learn quickly that the stock from which they must choose is sparse. ... While not as elusive as some of the in-very-short-supply 'CC' half eagles from the 1870s, the 1883 date is scarce in its own right. This is especially true regarding Mint State specimens."

Goe estimates that only six to eight of the 100 to 130 surviving representative exist in Uncirculated condition. Those coins seldom appear on the open market. This outstanding honey-gold offering maintains vibrant mint frost over surprisingly smooth surfaces. Reddish accents complement each side, and the devices exhibit a pinpoint-sharp impression. Population: 4 in 62 (1 in 62+), 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 62, 1 finer (11/24).
