Description

1898 Liberty Half Eagle
PR64+ Deep Cameo

Low-Mintage Proof Rarity

1898 $5 JD-1, R.5, PR64+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The production of 75 proofs stands out as one of the lowest proof mintages of the late-era Liberty half eagles. For all 42 proof issues from 1866 to 1907, the mintage is tied for 24th lowest, but it is tied with 1894 for the lowest proof production of all issues from 1892 to 1907. John Dannreuther identifies a single die pair for the 1898 proof half eagles. CAC has endorsed this stunning near-Gem Deep Cameo proof as a remarkable example at the grade level. The fully detailed devices are highly lustrous, featuring brilliant butter-yellow mint frost, surrounded by fully and deeply mirrored fields. Population: 3 in 64 (2 in 64+) Deep Cameo, 13 finer. CAC: 4 in 64, 10 finer (12/24).
