1911-D Half Eagle, MS64
Low-Mintage D-Mint Issue
Important Condition Rarity

1911-D $5 MS64 PCGS. The Denver Mint struck a modest mintage of 72,500 Indian half eagles in 1911, as there was little commercial demand for the coins in the regional economy at the time. The coins were released into circulation at the time of issue with little fanfare and relatively few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. The coins circulated for many years before the elusive nature of the issue was recognized, suffering extensive wear and attrition along the way. As might be expected, the 1911-D is a challenging issue in all grades today. Mint State coins are especially elusive. Mike Fuljenz writes in Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century:

"While the similarly dated quarter eagle is a much better known issue, the 1911-D half eagle is a far rarer coin in high grades. It is the fourth rarest Indian Head half eagle in Gem Uncirculated, trailing only the 1912-S, 1913-S, and 1914-S, and it must be considered among the prime rarities among all 20th century United States gold coinage in MS65 and higher grades."

The present coin is an attractive MS64 example, with sharply detailed design elements throughout. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are minimally marked, with vibrant mint luster on both sides. Fine detail is evident in the lower headdress feathers and the eagle's shoulder. Overall eye appeal is outstanding for this elusive branch mint issue. Gold specialist David Akers noted, "Clearly, this issue is one of the most significant stumbling blocks to the completion of a high-grade Indian Half Eagle set." This coin will be a welcome addition to a fine collection of 20th-century gold. Population: 19 in 64 (3 in 64+), 2 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N10218)
