Description

1929 Half Eagle, MS64
Few Known Finer

1929 $5 MS64 NGC. After San Francisco in 1916, no half eagles were coined by any mint until 1929, when Philadelphia struck a new batch of 662,000 coins, still employing Bela Lyon Pratt's sunken relief Indian and eagle motifs. Why these coins were struck is unclear -- possibly for a commercial need suddenly eradicated by the stock market crash late in the year, or as a course of coining excess gold bullion not needed in double eagle form. Regardless, only a few hundred of the coins were ever distributed through official channels, rendering the majority of the mintage subject to the mass gold melts of the mid-1930s. Today, the 1929 is a melt rarity and a key date in the Indian half eagle series.

This Choice example is well struck with bright straw-gold luster. A few light marks in the obverse fields limit the grade but are not bothersome for the MS64 level. Census: 70 in 64 (2 in 64+, 1 in 64+ ), 7 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N4719)
