Description

1911 Indian Half Eagle, PR65
Strong Eye Appeal for the grade

1911 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR65 NGC. Today, matte proof gold coins from the early 1900s are among the numismatic elite, delicacies that maintain a high level of desirability and demand. At the time they were issued, this was not the case. Only those collectors who desired to maintain their run of proof gold coinage sought out the matte finish proofs, which the Mint introduced in part because other proof finishes did not translate well to the incuse Indian Head design. To its credit, the Mint reverted to satin finish proofs in 1910 and ended up melting many unsold pieces. The sandblast finish returned for 1911 proofs, albeit with a texture similar to 1908 proofs. Color ranges for the 1911 proofs range from mustard-yellow to dark-brown. This is a mustard-orange Gem proof, with fleeting reddish accents and medium-fine matte texture. The coin shows only the most minor surface flaws while maintaining excellent eye appeal throughout both the obverse and the reverse. Indian Head specialists who seek out the best of matte proofs will find this coin's appearance irresistible. Census: 15 in 65, 30 finer (11/24).
