Description

1913 Indian half Eagle, PR66
Rare Sandblast Proof
Only 99 Examples Struck

1913 $5 JD-1, Low R.5, PR66 NGC. The final three years of Indian five dollar proofs are all scarce issues that become rare in high grades. In 1913, only 99 proofs were struck. John Dannreuther notes "the high-grade 1913 half eagles bring price battles when they appear in auctions." This Premium Gem exemplifies such a proof, with smooth, tawny-gold color -- not too dark, not too light -- just right for outstanding eye appeal. The strike is equally impressive throughout the intricate headdress elements and the stars are each struck to perfection. The reverse is equally well-preserved and intricately defined. This is the first 1913 PR66 Indian Head five we have handled in almost three years, and with the current high interest in proof gold we expect a strong price will be required to take this beauty home. NGC Census: 12 in 66 (3 in 66+), 10 finer (11/24).
