Description

1873-CC Eagle, AU53
Winter 2-B

1873-CC $10 AU53 NGC. Winter 2-B, the rare 1873-CC variety. Although a third variety was once described as Winter 1-A, obverse dies 1 and 2 are now recognized as the same, thus varieties 1-A and 2-A are the same, and they are the usual varieties for the 1873-CC eagles. The Winter 2-B die combination that is offered here is infrequently encountered.

The 1873-CC is one of the great condition rarities in the Liberty eagle series. The Carson City Mint struck just 4,543 of these eagles in 1873, and perhaps 55 to 65 examples survive today in grades up to AU58, the finest certified at NGC or PCGS. This example has pleasing buff-gold surfaces with scattered grade-consistent marks. Census: 10 in 53, 3 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N7079)
