1919-D 50C MS65 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor. The 1919-D needs no introduction as the preeminent condition rarity in the Walking Liberty half dollar series. Although widely available in lower circulated grades, it becomes challenging in AU condition and exceedingly difficult to locate in Mint State. When found, Uncirculated survivors usually grade no higher than MS62, though advanced collectors should be able to find a Select or Choice example with patience and considerable resources.

An entirely different reality emerges with respect to the availability of the 1919-D in Gem condition. Suddenly, this becomes not only the top rarity in the entire Walking Liberty series, but one of the most challenging of all 20th century issues. Writing about this set, Dr. Duckor explained that the 1919-D has proven to be, in his experience, the rarest non-gold 20th century coin in fully struck Gem condition with CAC approval. Approximately 12 to 15 examples are believed extant in MS65. This is one of only two Gems at CAC. A single PCGS-certified representative is graded higher.

From a mintage of 1.1 million coins, the 1919-D is usually found weakly struck without much central design detail. In some cases, the impression is such that roller marks are still visible over Liberty's branch hand and the eagle's breast feathers. Luster, like strike definition, tends to be below average. Finally, most examples offered in high grades show little to no original toning.

This spectacular 1919-D Walking Liberty Gem defies all expectations for what the 1919-D should be. Perhaps most impressive is its pinpoint-sharp strike. The branch hand and eagle's feathers are nearly fully formed. Both Liberty's head and the trailing leg on the reverse are similarly well-detailed. Blatantly original surfaces showcase speckled shades of golden-russet and crimson patina with light silver centers and glistening satin luster. The eye appeal, strong impression, and top-notch preservation are nearly unparalleled. This is one of the highlights of the Duckor Family Collection, and it is certain hold the same position in any future set. Population: 11 in 65, 1 finer. CAC: 33% of submissions for this issue/grade passed. 1 in 65, 1 finer (11/17).
