Description

1866 Five Dollar, Choice AU
Underrated Philadelphia Issue

1866 $5 AU55 NGC. A bold almond-gold example with ample luster and typically abraded fields. The 1866 is another low mintage Philly five from the 1862 to 1877 era when gold coin was hoarded throughout most of the country. The 1866 was the first to display IN GOD WE TRUST on a banner above the eagle. Just 6,700 pieces were coined, and survivors are even fewer than expected with such a production. NGC has certified a mere 43 coins in all grades. Census: 7 in 55, 19 finer (7/19).
