1915-S Panama-Pacific Fifty Dollar, MS64
Round Format

1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS64 NGC. Former ANA president Joseph Farran Zerbe was instrumental in several commemorative gold series including the extensive series issued for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Zerbe was born in Tyrone, Pennsylvania on April 16, 1871, and died in New York City on December 25, 1949. Tyrone, Pennsylvania is located just over 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, and about 10 miles northeast of Altoona.

During his youth, Zerbe delivered newspapers for the Tyrone Daily Herald. He was the proprietor of a variety store by the age of 18. Zerbe's numismatic interest began as a child, and he joined the ANA in 1900. His connection with the ANA was rapid, becoming a vice-president in 1904 and president of the association in 1907.

After declaring bankruptcy in September 1900, Zerbe devoted his life to coins and collectibles. He was a contributor to The Numismatist, a magazine that he purchased from the heirs of the founder in 1908. There is no doubt that Zerbe was a controversial figure. Numismatic writer David T. Alexander described him as "an energetic, self-promoting figure whose overall demeanor suggested a carny grifter rather than a distinguished numismatist"

To this day, Farran Zerbe is remembered as a controversial figure who provided his numismatic expertise to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the Lewis and Clark Exposition, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Without Zerbe's activities, these $50 round and octagonal pieces may never have existed. This Choice Mint State example is highly lustrous and free of marks, featuring brilliant lemon-yellow surfaces.(Registry values: N10218)
