1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar
Kagin-2, MS62

1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Five Dollar MS62 PCGS. K-2, R.4. According to a news bulletin in the April 4, 1860 edition of the Rocky Mountain News, Clark, Gruber & Co. planned from the beginning to produce gold pieces in denominations of two and a half, five, ten, and twenty dollars. When the firm began producing coins later in 1860, the two larger denomination employed a design involving a rather inaccurate depiction of Pike's Peak, while the two lesser denominations utilized designs akin to their federal counterparts. The 1860 Clark, Gruber five dollar piece is plentiful among the firm's surviving coins, although it is still scarce in the absolute sense with only 150 to 180 pieces likely extant.

This Mint State example displays satiny butter-gold surfaces with fields that look entirely too clean for the grade. Instead, light marks on Liberty's cheek determine the MS62 designation. This piece is from the late die state, with numerous fine cracks across the shattered obverse, and some die bulging between the date and star 13. Listed on page 423 of the 2025 Guide Book. Population: 10 in 62 (1 in 62+), 10 finer (12/24).
