Description

1868 Twenty Dollar, MS60
Vibrant Mint Frost
Very Rare This Fine

1868 $20 MS60 PCGS. The date is boldly repunched on this Uncirculated 1868 double eagle. It is most apparent on the flag and base of the 1, the base of the first 8, and above the second 8. The doubling is certainly strong enough to merit mention in the Cherrypickers' Guide, but neither Fivaz and Stanton nor Walter Breen mention it in their respective references. More impressive is this coin's preservation. It is one of no more than 15 to 20 Mint State survivors. Although several deep gouges are seen at the upper obverse and abrasions are peppered throughout, both sides are incredibly lustrous with thick mint frost and luminous yellow-gold color. A hint of semiprooflikeness in the fields is expected of a low-mintage issue like the 1868 (98,575 coins struck). Uniformly well-defined. Population: 3 in 60, 10 finer (11/17).
