Description
1854-D Quarter Eagle, AU55
Variety 17-M, the Only Dies
1854-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 17-M. The only known dies
for 1854-D quarter eagles, used to produce just 1,760 coins. In the
second edition of his Dahlonega reference, published nearly a
decade ago, Doug Winter suggested that only five or six Mint State
pieces exist. Today, the number is probably closer to 10 pieces.
However, this date remains elusive in all grades, with a total
population estimated at 70 to 80 coins, and an average certified
grade of just 46. The present piece, a lovely Choice AU specimen,
is extremely important to advance collectors, with brilliant and
satiny yellow surfaces, minimal high point wear, and pleasing
surfaces that show few blemishes. Population: 3 in 55, 13 finer
(3/12).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HZ, PCGS# 7771, Greysheet# 8373)
Weight: 4.18 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
