Description

Near-Gem 1870-S Two and a Half
Tied for Finest Certified

1870-S $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. The Reconstruction Era saw a string of low-mintage gold issues from the San Francisco Mint, especially in the quarter eagle series, which was far less popular than the half eagles. The 1870-S issue is one such, produced to the extent of a meager 16,000 pieces. and most of them apparently circulated far and wide, down to an average grade for certified pieces of Choice XF or thereabouts. This near-Gem boasts bright, shimmering mint frost with rich orange-gold color over sharply struck surfaces. The grade is apparently determined by several small marks, visible with a glass, in the obverse fields and on Liberty's cheek. Both PCGS and NGC have seen a single grading event in MS64, with none finer (3/12).(Registry values: P2)
