Description

1880 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Only 36 Examples Struck

1880 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Only 36 proof gold dollars were struck in 1880, making the date rare from the time of issue. Fortunately, the 1880 proof has a higher-than-normal survival rate, and PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at 22-28 examples in all grades. Proofs can be differentiated from prooflike business-strikes by the solidly joined wreath tops on the reverse, which are separated on regular-issue coinage of the year.

This delightful Gem exhibits razor-sharp definition on all design elements, and the deeply mirrored fields contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are well-preserved and eye appeal is terrific. Census: 8 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (3/15).
