Description
1879-S Reverse of 1878 Dollar, MS65
Deep Mirror Prooflike, None Equal or Finer
1879-S $1 Reverse of 1878 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. A
Top 100 Variety. The diagnostic parallel top arrow feather and the
concave breast on the eagle identify this rare variety, estimated
to represent perhaps only 1% of the year's mintage (between 90,000
and 100,000 coins). It is about 100 times rarer than the typical
1879-S dollar with the Reverse of 1879.PCGS has not certified a single Deep Mirror Prooflike example. NGC reports ten pieces in lesser grades, but only this example in Gem condition (3/14). The coin is as exceptional in appearance as it is rare, with brilliant, reflective fields and deeply frosted devices. Some mint caused die striations appear on the reverse, but the coin is remarkably unabraded for the assigned grade and fully struck.
