Description

1787 1C Fugio Cent, New Haven Restrike, Copper AU50 ANACS. Newman 104-FF. The common name of this variety is a misnomer. It wasn't made in New Haven and it isn't a restrike. It is a copy of the Fugio series that wasn't made from true 1787 dies but from new dies created about 1860. Apparently, it was struck by Scovill in what was then the brass and copper manufacturing capital: Waterbury, Connecticut. The reverse die shows a bit of die rust, as usual. This specimen has a nice golden brown color. Listed on page 64 of the 2002 Guide Book.
From the David Bruce Collection.
