Description

1856 Half Dime, PR66 Cameo
Deeply Toned Example, Ex: Gardner

1856 H10C PR66 Cameo PCGS. V-2. The year 1856 represents an expansion in proof coinage, and, even though mintage figures were not officially recorded, surviving populations suggest increased collector interest at the time. This half dime issue remains rare, however, and the grading service populations (23 coins certified by PCGS in total, 26 by NGC) are in close alignment with Breen's estimate of 30 to 40 pieces.

This piece is tied with just two others as the finest at PCGS (11/15). Obverse fields of intense blue and gold contrast with a lighter figure of Liberty, awash in coral and silver. The brilliant reverse center is surrounded by thick shades of russet, magenta, and purple. The mirrors penetrate the toning on both sides, and the eye appeal is strong.
